Apicoectomy in Oxford, MS

At Oxford Maxillofacial Surgery Center, we specialize in apicoectomy, a surgical procedure designed to save a tooth when a standard root canal treatment is not enough. If you have persistent infection or inflammation around the root tip of a previously treated tooth, an apicoectomy may be the best solution to preserve your natural tooth and prevent further complications.

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a minor procedure that removes the tip of a tooth’s root along with any infected tissue. The steps typically include:

  • Incision & Access – A small incision is made in the gum to expose the tooth’s root.
  • Removal of Infected Tissue – The damaged root tip and surrounding infection are carefully removed.
  • Sealing the Root – The root canal is sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection.
  • Closure & Healing – The gum tissue is sutured back into place for healing.

This procedure helps eliminate infection while preserving the integrity of the tooth.

When Is an Apicoectomy Needed?

An apicoectomy may be recommended if:

  • A previous root canal treatment has failed to fully eliminate infection.
  • A cyst or chronic inflammation is present near the tooth’s root.
  • Retreatment with a traditional root canal is not an option.
  • The tooth is structurally intact and worth preserving.

If left untreated, an infected root tip can lead to pain, swelling, and further bone loss around the tooth.
